Why

Our language immersion camps are creative, challenging, and most of all, fun! The best time for cognitive retention and learning is at a young age. Because of this, we offer classes and camps taught in Mandarin and Spanish to children ages five to 12. These classes are designed for children with a prior foundation in these languages. Our goal is to help expand worldviews and foster an appreciation for cultural diversity. Because these children are already investing in these languages, we want them to have the opportunity to practice their language skills and simultaneously invest in the cultures and peoples that speak these languages every day.

Common Questions

  • Who should attend the immersion camps?: This camp is ideal for students already attending a Chinese immersion school, Mandarin classes or Spanish classes in the San Francisco Bay Area, and that are looking to practice their skills during school breaks. Our experienced instructors are native speakers, fluent in either Spanish or Mandarin and have been teaching art, textiles & jewelry making classes in the target language with Dragonfly Designs in afterschool enrichment classes.  They will expertly lead students through art projects in the target language to enhance language skills and comprehension while having fun crafting art, textiles & jewelry! These camps are ideal for boys & Girls, ages 5 and up!
  • Is before & aftercare taught in English?: Yes, before and aftercare are always taught in English, not in the target language.
  • Do I need to provide snacks and lunch? We will provide a healthy snack but we ask the parent to provide a lunch.
  • How many teachers will there be? Our teacher to student ratio does not exceed 10:1 and is often much lower.
  • Who teaches these classes? Our Main Camp counselors are permanent year-round employees of Dragonfly Designs who teach in our afterschool enrichment programs & host parties.
  • My child has never (or has done a lot) of jewelry making. Is this a good fit for them? We group children by age & ability level & tailor projects to ensure they are developmentally appropriate & fun!
    • Art & Jewelry + Immersion camps are for ages 5-12
    • Textiles & Fiber Arts camps are for ages 7-14
  • I want to make sure my child is active during the day – do children play outside?  Yes! A typical day includes a variety of tasks to keep kids active. In addition to art, textiles & jewelry making they also will have time for yoga and outdoor free play time!
