Crafting a Cement Pendant

A white and gold jewelry set on a plate.

Ok, if you haven’t seen or heard of this technique before just bear with us, because the results can be amazing! You might be picturing little clumps of rubble on a string or perhaps crude initials scratched in a dull grey slab…

Nope! Cement has come a long way since the Flintstones. It can be colored, polished, shaped; it’s strong and surprisingly lightweight! As always, we looove anything that lets us create something new AND do our own thing at the same time!

Below are step by step instructions for making a pendant necklace out of cement. This however, is just the tip of the iceberg of possibilities cement brings to the table. We love cement as our new jewelry making material must-have. Go wild and show us what you come up with!

Materials:
  • Cement powder
  • Color pigment (as desired)
  • Mold release solution (optional)
  • Water
  • Cups
  • Spoons
  • A mold

Step 1: It goes without saying but we’re going to say it anyway: start by covering your surface with newspaper or another material of your preference to protect your table and make cleanup easier!

Step 2: Add in the amount of cement powder that you think you will need into a cup. As an example we used 2-3 spoonfuls for the mold pictured. You will then slowly add water into the powder and mix it thoroughly until you see the mixture turns into a gooey texture. You don’t want the mixture to be too watery, or the cement won’t harden.

Note: Here you can also add colored pigment into your cement mixture if you wish. Mix the colored pigment and the cement powder thoroughly with WARM water (so the pigment powder will dissolve easier.) Again, make sure the mixture has a gooey texture.

Step 3: Mold release is not necessary for creating the cement pendant, but if you want to apply some it can’t hurt. Use a spoon as a guide while pouring in the cement. If it piles up in one area, tap your mold gently against the table to flatten out the mixture. Once flat, you can add some gold leaf on top of the mixture and let them set together.

Options: You can pour one colored pigment into the mold OR you can apply half colored pigment mixture and half natural colored then apply some glitter or other elements you desire onto the flattened surface. Play around with the colors and mixture!
