Let us introduce our amazing instructor & staff mentor Sora! Sora has been making an impact on our company since day one. She’s a quick-learner, always the first to ask why, and investigate the how. Her love of systems and being involved in how things function quickly catapulted her from her role as solely an instructor to instructor & staff mentor. Now she’s become involved in creating our curriculum, training new teachers, working with current ones, and leading parts of team meetings. In fact, she’s currently creating a new ceramic jewelry curriculum which we are all excited for!
Her background as a highschool art teacher is part of the reason she’s so awesome at her job. She’s a fantastic multitasker and has extensive experience working with people of all backgrounds. As an art teacher, she taught ceramics, drawing, 3D sculpture and more for four years! In the Dragonfly Designs courses, the kids are naturally drawn to her kind nature that makes her instruction giving engaging. She works well with every age group, which is quite a feat!
One of her role models is instagram influencer Cassie Stephenz, whose creative teaching style influences how Sora interacts with her classrooms! Sora describes Cassie as the Miss Frizzle of art teachers, colorful, creative, and dedicated to a unique learning experience.
Despite her profession and passion, art education wasn’t always her career focus. In college, Sora studied biology in hopes of becoming a dentist. She found that when this path became hard her motivation lagged, her heart wasn’t in it. She wanted to be a dentist mainly to work with the tools and engage with people, but everything else involved she found lackluster. After some thought and a few key experiences, she found she was able to translate that love of tools and interpersonal connection into art.
Art has always been a part of Sora’s life, even if it wasn’t the main focus. As an artist, her mother filled their home with a multitude of creative experiences. Sora feels most comfortable when she’s drawing or painting, with charcoal graphite being her favorite medium. We have to say she’s pretty great at ceramics though, check out this amazing pot!
Outside of work, Sora loves to be in nature, especially if she’s on a run with her dog! Running has been a consistent passion of hers, so much so, that she ran for Team USA in Venezuela. She had an amazing trip that exposed her to diversity she hadn’t experienced before.
Even though she struggles with driving in the city (you always have to add at least 15 minutes to the google maps ETA and parking is nonexistent!) she loves being involved in a workplace that offers so much variety. We are so thankful to have Sora on our team!
